Miami Little Theatre History

THE BIRTH OF MIAMI LITTLE THEATRE

In 1959, a group interested in community theatre decided to take a cue from "The Little Rascals" and "do a show!" The group included Robert Gobetz, Opal Wright, Belva Carson, Dr. Charles Letcher, Hartley Owens and Jess Heck. That first production was "The Male Animal" and was the beginning of the Miami Little Theatre. Here we are 49 years and more than 180 shows later and we are still going strong.

Miami Little Theatre is headquartered in its permanent home across the street from the Coleman Theatre where costumes, set pieces and just a lot of stuff is stored. That is also where auditions, rehearsals and monthly board meetings are held. The board is made up of 18 people who donate their time and talent to keep live theatre a part of the community. We are so grateful to the community for their help and support. When we needed a claw-foot bathtub for a show, we placed an ad in the newspaper and the next day we had 12 bathtubs! We are always looking for not only actors, but carpenters, painters, costume makers, backstage workers, people to collect props ... the list goes on and on. So, if you are interested in live theatre, we may have a job for you!
