MLT presents Youth On Stage 2013

Youth on Stage registration is Tuesday, June 4th from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the Miami Little Theatre building. Cost is $50 for the workshop. The fee helps defray the cost of the scripts, costumes, play royalties and the Coleman rental fee. The cast will be performing one or both of these plays; "Aesop's Open Auditions" and/or "Aesop's (OH So Slightly) Updated Fables". On Friday June 7th, the children will be auditioning for their roles to gain audition experience. Performance dates are the evenings of June 27 & 28 at the Coleman Theatre. The workshop begins June 5th at 10:00 am to 12:00. Rehearsals will be held Monday through Thursday. The cast is limited to 30 students between the ages of 7 through 14. MLT's “August: Osage County” debuts Thursday at Coleman Theatre

For its third show of the season Miami Little Theatre brings a Pulitzer Prize-winning play written by Oklahoman Tracy Letts to the Coleman Theatre stage for a four-run performance.

This past summer, the Bartlesville and Pawhuska communities were abuzz with the arrival of superstars Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts for a $25 million film version of the play—an adult-themed comedy/drama.

The story revolves around an eccentric Oklahoma family as they experience a crisis caused by the disappearance of hard-drinking poet-dad, Beverly. His wife, Violet, has been diagnosed with cancer and has become addicted to drugs. Daughters Barbara, Karen and Ivy come together, along with the rest of the family, for a dramatic series of conflicts. Periodic dosages of humor occasionally soothe the tragedy of the unfolding events, thanks to the quirkiness of the whole ensemble.

MLT’s dynamic cast includes Jerry Venis, Paula Darnell, Lynn Forkum, Phillip Shamblin, Jean Fordham, Linda Kerby, Donna Bass, Kathryn Wenzel, Robert McKibben, Shannon Duhon, Mackenzie Shamblin, Randy Billings and Bud Catt.

The play is directed by MLT President Pamela Catt. Judy Pitman is assistant director.

“I am so pleased to bring this award-winning drama to Miami,” Catt says. “This show is intense, and the themes are timeless — from jealousies to addictions to complex family relationships. While MLT is widely known for its blockbuster musicals, there is a large segment of our patrons who ask for and appreciate strong dramas and more contemporary offerings. This one won’t disappoint.”

Tickets are $13 for adults, $10 for seniors and students. Due to the adult themes and strong profanity, the director recommends the appropriate audience to be 18 and older. Next up is a lighthearted stage favorite, the venerable and very family-friendly “Life with Father,” which will be presented in April.

Area theater-goers are in for a treat this week as Miami Little Theatre presents the comedy musical “1940's Radio Hour.” This crowd-pleasing production premiers Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. at the Coleman Theatre, downtown Miami.
Directed by MLT veteran Judy Pitman, the play is chock full of sentimental 1040s music and dancing.
The plot involves a struggling New York radio station, broadcasting a special radio program for the World War II troops overseas. It's the station's final holiday broadcast of the Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade.
Among the eclectic cast of characters are the ulcer-ridden announcer and general manager, a bubble-headed waitress turned singer, a crotchety stage-hand, and the 'old show standard' Dinah Shore-like singer who's a secretary by day.
Familiar tunes include “Blue Moon,” “Chiquita Banana,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “I Got it Bad,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and many more.
“I am really excited about this show,” stated Pitman. “I love the nostalgic music that I remember so fondly from the past. And this cast is the most professional group of amateurs I've worked with. They're wonderful!”
The magnificent Coleman Theatre stage will provide the ideal backdrop for this delightful production. The show will also be performed Friday and Saturday evening with a final Sunday matinee performance at 2:30 p.m.
Assisting Pitman with the production are assistant director Linda Kerby and choreographer Lee Dell Mustain.

MLT's “Annie Get Your Gun” debuts Thursday at the Coleman

A dynamic cast of MLT veterans and some exciting newcomers will showcase their acting talents as Miami Little Theatre presents the beloved musical “Annie Get Your Gun” at the Coleman Theatre September 20-23.

With music written by Irving Berlin, the play is a fictionalized version of the life of Annie Oakley, a sharpshooter who starred in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, and her romance with sharpshooter Frank Butler.

The show produced a number of memorable songs including “There's No Business Like Show Business,” “Doin' What Comes Natur'lly,” “You Can't Get a Man with a Gun,” and “Anything You Can Do.”

MLT will produce an updated version of the show that manages to retain all of the fun and charm of the 1946 blockbuster, but is more sensitive to modern Native American culture.

“Though the musical is mostly a fictitious tale, the spirit of Annie Oakley remains true: an adventurous, confident woman whose talent transforms her into the first female American superstar,” explains director of the show and MLT President Pamela Catt. “I'm very glad I have the opportunity to direct 'Annie Get Your Gun.' The music of Irving Berlin and the story of Annie Oakley go together surprisingly well.”

The cast includes Ashlyn Bashore as Annie Oakley and Brock Goben as Frank Butler. Jerry Venis plays the part of Buffalo Bill.

Amanda Cole plays Dolly Tate; John Gray plays Tommy Keeler; Anastasia Stephens plays Winnie Tate; Zachary Thomas plays Charlie Davenport, Jeffrey Haynes plays Sitting Bull; Robert McKibben plays Foster Wilson and Andrew Bayliss plays Mac.

Kayla and Ashlyn Ford play the parts of Jessie and Nellie; Spencer Smith plays Jake; Alex Walls plays Running Deer; Dillon Rasberry plays Eagle Feather; and Richard Rohde plays Pawnee Bill.

The musical ensemble features Nathan and Vicki Carter, Eric Carter, Brent Ford, Jaysen Ford, Rod Neal, Halle Griswald, Julie Michels, Peyton Lacy, Angela Helmig, Karen Vanover, Briah Harnar, JulieAnna, Kateri, and Annamaria Rohde, Abeni Michels, Chrisann Lamb, Rayanna Lamb, Dillon Rasberry, Alex and Garrett Walls, Judy Pitman, Alexis Owens, Alexa Payne, Brooke Bashore, Christian Ross and Ronan Lamb.

Assistant director for “Annie” is Judy Pitman, who will be directing the next show, “1940's Radio Hour.” The show will be choreographed by Lee Dell Mustain. Vocal directors are Amanda Cole and Christian Ross. The set designer is Bud Catt.

She added, “the lead roles of Annie Oakley and Frank Butler, played respectively by Ashlyn Bashore and Brock Goben, reflect a level of talent that any theatre-goer will appreciate.”

Truvy's beauty salon in Chinqaupin, LA is where all the ladies who are "anybody" come to have their hair done. Annelle (Miranda Tanksley) is not sure whether or not she is married. The outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy (Tricia Medlin) dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town's curmudgeon, Ouiser (Pamela Catt). An eccentric millionaire, Clairee (Kay Boman-Harvey) and the local social leader, M'Lynn (Paula Darnell) whose daughter, Shelby (Megan Walker) is about to marry a "good ole boy", round out the circle.

In the world of this southern beauty shop, six very different women come together to share their secrets, fears and love for one another while engaging the audience in hysterical and neighborly gossip. From weddings to divorces, babies to funerals, new beginnings to happy endings, they share each moment in their lives with grace, determination, and perfectly coiffed hair. When tragedy strikes, it is the familiar comfort of Truvy's salon where they seek solace and support that carries them through.

We invite you to be the "fly on the wall" and watch as these six women let down their hair and their guard, where class lines are dissolved, rich and poor, young and old become equal. By the way, be sure and grab a tissue because as Truvy says, "Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion".

It's Christmas time and the only thing on Ralphie Parker's Christmas list this year is a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot, Range Model Air Rifle, but many obstacles stand in the way of his dream because every adult who he confronts keeps telling him he'll shoot his eye out.

Meanwhile, the Old Man just got a major prize (a lamp shaped like a woman's leg), and Mom is making sure The Old Man doesn't come near her turkey. Ralphie's friend gets his tongue stuck to a flag pole, and Ralphie drops the f-bomb in front of his father. Christmas is drawing nearer and Ralphie visits Santa at the department store in hopes of asking him for his dream gift. Will he recieve it?

Miami Little Theatre proudly presents this family-friendly comedy written by Jean Shepherd to the Coleman stage for the second show of its 52nd season. Director Judy Pitman has assembled a gifted cast including Corbin Walls as Ralphie, Lonnie Portenier as The Old Man, Linda Kerby as the Mother, Garrett Walls as Randy.

Also, rounding out the cast are Mike Barlow, the narrator (voiced through Ralphie's perspective), Kalisha Burtrum as Miss Shields, Austin Henson as Flick, Dillon Rasberry as Schwartz, Kaki Barlow as Esther Jane Alsberry, Halle Griswold as Helen Weathers, and Alex Walls as Scut Farkas.
